What are veterans' disability benefits in New York?

Veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and are now living with a service-connected disability may be entitled to benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In New York, veterans may also qualify for additional state and local benefits. Understanding these programs can help veterans access the support they’ve earned.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

VA Disability Compensation

The primary federal benefit available is VA disability compensation, which provides tax-free monthly payments to veterans with service-connected disabilities. The amount depends on:

  • Your disability rating (10% to 100%)
  • Number of dependents (spouse, children, parents)
  • Whether you qualify for special monthly compensation (e.g., for loss of use of a limb or aid and attendance)

You may also be eligible for back pay if the VA determines your disability began before your application date.

New York State Veterans’ Benefits

In addition to federal VA benefits, New York State offers a range of additional services and supports for disabled veterans:

Property Tax Exemptions

Disabled veterans may qualify for partial property tax exemptions through programs like:

  • Eligible Funds Exemption
  • Alternative Veterans Exemption
  • Cold War Veterans Exemption

These can significantly reduce property taxes for qualified homeowners.

Veterans’ Tuition Awards

If you’re a disabled veteran looking to pursue higher education, New York offers Veterans’ Tuition Awards to cover costs at approved institutions.

Access to State Veterans Homes

Disabled veterans may receive care at one of New York’s state-run veterans homes, which provide skilled nursing care and rehabilitation.

Employment Preferences

Disabled veterans receive civil service exam credits (10 points for service-connected disability) and may be eligible for priority job referrals through the New York State Department of Labor.

Other VA-Administered Benefits for Veterans

Veterans in New York also have access to other key VA programs:

  • VA Health Care: Comprehensive medical services for eligible veterans
  • Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E): Job training and resume support for veterans with service-connected disabilities
  • VA Home Loans: Special financing options with no down payment for home purchases
  • VA Caregiver Support: Assistance for family caregivers of veterans with serious disabilities
