By Hogan Smith

Updated 07/18/2025

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in New York, it is crucial to keep your address updated with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This ensures you continue receiving important notices, benefit statements, and any required documentation without delays.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Why Updating Your Address Matters

Keeping your address current ensures:

  • You receive payments without interruption, especially if you still receive paper checks or correspondence about your direct deposit
  • You remain compliant with SSA requirements, avoiding missed deadlines for reviews or appeals
  • SSA can contact you quickly if additional information is needed for your case

2. Ways to Change Your Address

a. Online via my Social Security

The fastest and easiest way is online:

  • Go to ssa.gov/myaccount
  • Log into your my Social Security account
  • Click on “My Profile”
  • Select “Update Contact Information”
  • Enter your new address and effective date, then save your changes

Note: If you don’t already have an account, you can create one at the same link by verifying your identity.

b. By Phone

  • Call SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 7 PM)
  • Have your Social Security number and current address ready for verification
  • Provide your new address and the date you want the change to take effect

c. In Person

  • Visit your local Social Security office
  • Bring a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID
  • Find your nearest office using ssa.gov/locator

3. Updating Address for Direct Deposit

Changing your mailing address does not automatically update your direct deposit bank information. If you’re moving and changing banks as well, make sure to:

  • Update your direct deposit details separately through your SSA online account or during your phone or in-person visit

4. When Will the Change Take Effect?

Address changes are usually processed immediately online or within a few business days if made by phone or in person. Always confirm your new address is active by:

  • Logging into your my Social Security account
  • Checking your next SSA correspondence for accuracy
