If you're unable to work due to a serious medical condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. In New York, residents can apply for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Understanding the process will help you avoid delays and improve your chances of success.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Determine Which Program You Qualify For

There are two main federal disability programs:

  • SSDI is for those who have worked and paid Social Security taxes for enough years.
  • SSI is for individuals with low income and limited resources, regardless of work history.

Both require that your disability prevents you from working for at least 12 months or is expected to result in death.

Step 2: Gather Medical and Personal Documentation

To apply for disability in New York, you'll need:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Birth certificate or other proof of age
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of all medical providers
  • Medical records, test results, and treatment history
  • Work history for the past 15 years
  • W-2s or self-employment tax returns for the past year

Make sure your medical records clearly show how your condition limits your ability to work.

Step 3: File Your Application

You can apply in one of the following ways:

  • Online: Visit www.ssa.gov to apply.
  • By phone: Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
  • In person: Schedule an appointment at your local New York SSA office.

Take your time to answer all questions accurately and double-check for errors. Missing or incorrect information can lead to delays or denial.

Step 4: Wait for a Decision

After applying, your case will be sent to New York’s Division of Disability Determination. They may contact your doctors and request more records or have you attend a consultative exam.

A decision can take 3 to 6 months or longer, depending on how quickly your documentation is reviewed.

Step 5: Be Prepared to Appeal if Denied
It’s common to be denied initially. If that happens:

  • Don’t give up.
  • File a request for reconsideration within 60 days.
  • Continue gathering new medical evidence during the process.

Many people win benefits during the appeals process.
