If you live in New York and are unable to work due to a disability, you may qualify for disability compensation through federal programs, state benefits, or both. Understanding how disability compensation works in New York can help you access the financial support and medical care you need.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Federal Disability Compensation (SSDI & SSI)

Most disability compensation for New York residents comes from two federal programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA):

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

  • Designed for individuals who have worked and paid into Social Security.
  • Requires a certain number of work credits based on your age and work history.
  • You must have a medically determinable disability expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
  • SSDI payments are based on your past earnings.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • A needs-based program for disabled individuals with limited income and resources.
  • You don’t need a work history to qualify.
  • SSI provides monthly financial assistance and can also make you eligible for Medicaid.

New York State Disability Benefits

New York also offers short-term disability insurance (DBL) through employers:

  • Covers off-the-job injuries or illnesses.
  • Provides up to 50% of your average weekly wage, with a maximum benefit of $170 per week.
  • Benefits are typically paid for up to 26 weeks.
  • Employers are required to carry this insurance, and many offer enhanced coverage through private carriers.

Important: This program does not apply to long-term or permanent disabilities. For those, you’d need to apply for SSDI or SSI.

Additional Disability-Related Benefits in New York

Besides income compensation, disabled residents may also qualify for:

  • Medicaid or Medicare, depending on the program
  • Public housing or rental assistance
  • Transportation assistance, including reduced fares via the MTA
  • Veterans disability benefits (for those who served in the military)

Each program has its own application process and eligibility rules, so it’s important to assess all options.
